Stromness town stage
The community council approached 59 degrees north to work on a design to create a public space off the main street. This would enhance community events such as the annual shopping week festival and the Christmas tree lighting and also provide seating for everyday use.
The historic town of Stromness has a wonderful streetscape which has evolved organically over hundreds of years. The brief from the community council was to make an additional street space to accommodate local events on the site of a sloping under-used green space. A stage was set up each year with cost and health and safety implications and it was decided a more permanent solution should be sought. The design creates a terraced square with an organic plan, seating and a raised stage area. Local materials were detailed and specified with planting beds to boundary.
The project has been a great success and was well received by the folk of Stromness. The project was undertaken on a voluntary basis without a design fee.
